Starting winter season 2023/24, guests young and old will get to ascend from the village of Serfaus to Komperdell 2,000 m more comfortably than ever in the new, state-of-the-art 10-person cable car.
The start of construction was originally planned for 2021, but this had to be postponed by one year due to the corona virus. The joy was all the greater on February 1st, 2022, when the advisory board of the cable car company Komperdell GmbH gave the green light for the start of construction this spring!
The largest project in the history of the cable car company Komperdell GmbH is now to be implemented in two construction phases. Never before has the cable car been confronted with such a large investment sum (over 50 million euros!), and a logistical masterpiece will also be required. The Komperdell cable car is ready and is happy to be able to replace the "old" Komperdellbahn, which has been in service successfully for 34 years without any major incidents, with the new 10-seater EUB Komperdellbahn (single-cable gondola).
Due to the extensive construction work, it is necessary to split the work into two construction phases.
Construction phase I The first construction phase will take place in 2022. The new cable car route and the intermediate station in the area of the central descent at the level of the Leithe Wirt restaurant are being built. In this phase of construction there will be almost no restrictions for the guests.
Construction phase II The second construction phase will start in spring 2023. The existing Komperdellbahn will be removed and the valley and mountain stations will be rebuilt. However, this means that the Komperdellbahn will not be in operation in summer 2023. Appropriate diversions or transfers for hikers - especially to the Murmliwasser and the Lazidbahn - are currently being worked out.
Why an intemediate station?
The Gampen area is to be relieved with the new station. Ski schools and beginners can reach the new station via the easy middle run. Thus, the upper range is equalized automatically.
Especially in spring, the last section of the middle descent is very demanding - thanks to the new station, you can easily avoid this part with the gondola descent: This means that repeat runs can be undertaken without much effort.
Guests coming from Fiss or the Waldbahn to Serfaus no longer have to drive to the valley station, but can get on at the new intermediate station.
The Leithe Wirt restaurant can be reached in just a few minutes on foot from the station via an additional hiking trail. The delivery for the restaurant no longer has to be made from the valley, but can be made from the intermediate station much more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way.
So there are many reasons that speak for a stopover. The positioning of the station in this area naturally took into account the avalanche situation, so as not to be in a danger area. By the way: the gondola station is also located in the intermediate station.
What does the gondola like?
Together with the company Doppelmayr, an optimal 10-seater gondola was developed for the needs. It is deviated from the standard size to create more space inside. This means that the driving pleasure is even greater - whether in winter with skis or snowboards or in summer with a stroller or bike.
Everything is taken into the gondola, the annoying aiming of the skis in the ski holder is no longer necessary. Entry and exit at ground level ensure additional comfort, so the day on the mountain starts much more stress-free, especially with children.
What does the new valley and mountain stations look like
The valley station will be completely rebuilt on the north side of the existing building. There will be space for a large ski depot with over 5,000 parking spaces, a ski rental with shop and spacious storage areas for the cable car. In the mountain station, the ski school building will be completely relocated and direct access to the Kinderschneealm will be created.
